The Impact of A.I. on How Phone Scams Target Older Adults and Seniors

If you haven't heard of the A.I. takeover by now, you must be unplugged. Let me explain... A.I., or artificial intelligence, is sweeping the world. It can create art, compose music, and is even in development for self-driving cars. As A.I. rapidly advances, it brings forth numerous dangers, particularly for older adults and seniors.

One significant risk is the increasing complexity of phone scams. Scammers now use this technology to financially exploit older adults and seniors. It goes like this: A.I. is used to mimic their loved ones' voices in a phone call to make it seem like they are in danger and in need of money. The older adult or senior panics and wants to help. Money is gone within minutes and the scammer is onto the next victim.

Older adults and seniors that may be less tech savvy are the most vulnerable. However, there are solutions. Developing a unique safe word with your loved ones is one effective strategy, and always verifying a call by contacting the known and verified phone number is essential. As the world becomes more technologically advanced, these scams will only grow, making vigilance crucial.

"Real Housewife" is a Real Scammer

You expect perpetrators of elder abuse to be strangers or maybe even family, but not reality TV stars. Jen Shah is an American TV personality best known for starring in the reality TV show, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. She gained popularity for her confident and aggressive attitude, which made the show entertaining. However, on March 30, 2021, Shah was arrested for numerous counts of money laundering and fraud, targeting mainly older people. In a media interview, one of her victims spoke out, saying, "I was stupid enough to get caught in a scam, but I am not a stupid person." The victim went on to say that although it was embarrassing, they wanted to talk about the incident to warn others. The scam affected thousands of people and lasted for nine years. Shah has been sentenced to six years in prison.

At Proof Please, our primary goal is to protect and defend against elder abuse and any other form of injustice towards the older adults and seniors. We strongly disagree with and condemn Jen Shah's acts of manipulation and deception, especially towards older people who are more vulnerable to these types of incidents. Such scams can ruin many lives and can even come from celebrities or people whom you might think are least likely to scam you. If you suspect you or your elderly loved one is a victim of financial exploitation, contact us today for a free and confidential consultation.

Fighting Injustice in Nursing Homes

At Proof Please, we know putting your loved one in a nursing home can be very scary and stressful. Even if the caretaker you met seems nice and the reviews for the service seem all but perfect, you still might feel like something's wrong with their management, or even worse, your loved one in the nursing home is being abused or manipulated. A standard solution to this is reporting such problems to the nursing home and filing a complaint, but these often go unheard and ignored. A common misconception is that you can put a camera in your loved one’s room, but in Virginia this is illegal and if the nursing home finds out the camera was hidden illegally, they have the right to refuse care to the patient entirely.

This is where Proof Please can help. We are trained to use our observation skills to find injustice in nursing homes. Hire a licensed private investigator as soon as you feel like your loved one is being taken advantage of. We can inspect the nursing home without noticing the service beforehand which allows for the inspection to be as detailed as possible. Finally, we can do a comprehensive background investigation on the service to see if they have had any prior allegations making sure your loved one is receiving the best possible care with all the right people. Elder Abuse Investigations

Elder abuse can be defined as “an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult.” There are various forms of elder abuse: neglect (including self-neglect), abandonment, physical abuse, financial exploitation, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse. This is happening in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and even in the privacy of your home, and it doesn’t always appear as you’d think.

It’s not always bruises and bedsores. It’s the daughter who takes them to the bank for frequent withdrawals. It’s the contractor or landscaper who keeps needing money to “finish the job.” It’s not eating well, medication mismanagement, missed doctors appointments, and missed quality time with family or friends. It’s the unexplained reclusive behavior.

Behavioral indicators are less obvious than physical. A few clues to look for in your elderly loved will be signs of implausible stories, confusion or disorientation, denial, anxiety, withdrawal, depression, agitation, helplessness, or fear. With these signs, Proof Please can help direct an investigation from the very beginning. We will lead to specific situations that will help you get the proof you need to substantiate your case of elder abuse.

At Proof Please, we understand the complexities of elder abuse because we are not just licensed private investigators, we are caregivers and we are advocates for elder justice. Contact us to come on board to work with your legal team or hire us independently to conduct private investigations. We are fully equipped to capture hard evidence via audio recording, still photos, and video.
